quick help & faq - admissions

  • At Affinity University, we don’t just look at grades; we look for connection. We want to know how you plan to use technology, data, or business strategy to make the world a more human-centric place.

If you’re sitting down to write your statement, here are four pillars to help you brainstorm:

    1. Identify Your "Human" Why

We believe technology is a tool, not the destination. Instead of telling us you love coding or data, tell us who you want to help.

    • Ask yourself: Does your interest in AI come from wanting to improve accessibility? Does your passion for business stem from a desire to build more ethical companies?

    2. Highlight a "Connection" Moment

Think of a time you bridged a gap. Maybe you helped a non-technical teammate understand a complex project, or you used a digital tool to solve a community problem. We value students who can communicate across different fields.

    3. Show Your Curiosity for the Future

Affinity is a forward-looking institution. Mention which of our specialized hubs—like the Empowerment Lab or the Affinity Center—excites you most. How will our hands-on environment help you turn your "passion into a paycheck"?

    4. Be Authentically You

Don’t worry about sounding "academic" for the sake of it. We value clarity, personality, and a genuine desire to learn. If you’re undecided on a major, that’s okay! Tell us about the problems you are most curious to solve.

Ollie’s Pro-Tip: "Your personal statement is the one part of your application where you get to speak directly to us. Don't just list your resume—tell us the story behind it!"

  • Our AI guide, Ollie, and our admissions counselors recommend starting with your "Career Goal." If you want to work in [Field A], choose [Program X]. If you prefer [Field B], look into [Program Y]. You can always connect with one of these counselors by visiting our admissions office on campus, or chatting with one here at times that they cover our live chat (7 days a week, 8am-8pm)

Keywords: choose a major, pick a program, undecided, what should I study, interests, career goals, major selection, help me decide.

  • At Affinity University, we recommend matching your personal interests to our degree paths. Here are some common matches:

    • If you enjoy technology, puzzles, or coding: Explore our BS in Computer Science. It prepares you for careers like Software Developer or Cybersecurity Analyst.

    • If you are a natural leader or interested in business: Our BS in Business Administration is ideal for future Marketing Managers and Financial Analysts.

    • If you want to help people or study the mind: Consider a BA in Psychology, which leads to roles in Human Resources and Social Services.

    • If you like building things and innovation: The BS in Mechanical Engineering prepares you for Aerospace or Product Design.

    • If you are a storyteller or creative: Look into BA in Communications or BFA in Graphic Design.

  • Our graduate degrees are designed for professional advancement. Match your goal to the program below:

    • Goal: Executive Leadership or Entrepreneurship. * Recommended: Master of Business Administration (MBA).

    • Goal: Leading AI development or IT infrastructure. * Recommended: MS in Computer Science or IT Management.

    • Goal: High-level Data Science and Corporate Intelligence. * Recommended: MS in Data Science & Analytics.

    • Goal: Advanced Clinical Practice or Healthcare Administration. * Recommended: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).

    • Goal: Public Policy or Non-Profit Management. * Recommended: Master of Public Administration (MPA).

  • It is perfectly normal to be undecided! At Affinity University, we offer a three-step discovery process to help you find your perfect fit:

    1. Identify Your "Core Interest": Do you prefer working with People (Psychology, Nursing, Communications), Systems (Computer Science, Engineering), or Strategy (Business, Data Analytics)?

    2. Start as "Undeclared": You don't have to pick today. Our General Studies (Exploratory Track) allows you to complete core requirements while working with a Success Coach to test-drive different subjects.

    3. Take our Discovery Quiz: Type "Discovery Quiz" in my chat window and Iwill ask you a few questions about your favorite hobbies and career dreams. I will then generate a Recommended Program List just for you.

Pro-Tip: Most students change their major at least once. Our Flexible Curriculum makes it easy to pivot without losing your progress.

Keywords: no major, undeclared, exploratory, first year, don't know, start here, guidance, success coach.

If you have scores and want to submit them, we will consider them, but you will not be penalized if you do not.

Don't worry about the essay just yet! You can start the application now and upload your personal statement later.

  • We aim to make your transition as seamless as possible through formal Transfer Agreements (sometimes called Articulation Agreements). These partnerships ensure that the credits you’ve already earned are recognized and applied toward your degree here, saving you both time and tuition.

We have streamlined pathways for several of our most frequent partner institutions. These include:

    • Starlight University

    • Eastwind University

    • Riverstone College

    • Redwood College

    • Summit College

There is a good chance we have agreements with others. These are just the schools the most common ones. We encourage you to connect with a live admissions counselor but you may find what you are looking for with our Ask Ollie virtual assistant.

  • We believe that the best learning happens when you are a name, not a number. At Affinity University, our average class size is 18 students, ensuring you have direct access to our 'powerhouse' faculty and a seat at the table for every discussion.

With a student-to-faculty ratio of 12:1, you’ll receive the personalized mentorship and hands-on support needed to master your field. While some introductory lectures may be slightly larger, our upper-division and specialized lab courses often have fewer than 15 students.

To see how our small class sizes impact your specific program of interest, please visit our Academic Experience page.

To get back on track, simply follow these steps:

    1. Submit the Re-Admission Form: This is a shortened application that updates your contact info and intended major.

    2. Provide Updated Transcripts: If you attended any other institutions during your break, we’ll need those official records.

    3. Check Your Status: Our Registrar’s office will review your previous standing (usually within 5-7 business days).

    4. Meet Your Advisor: Once re-admitted, you'll meet with an Academic Advisor to see how your previous credits align with current degree requirements.

Depending on how long you've been away, you may still be eligible for your original degree requirements! To start your journey back, visit our Returning Student Portal

  • We understand that sometimes the best way to prepare for your 'powerhouse' journey is to take a little extra time for personal growth, travel, or professional experience. Affinity University allows admitted students to defer their enrollment for up to one full academic year.

To successfully request a gap year deferral, please follow these steps:

    1. Submit Your Deposit: You must first confirm your intent to enroll by submitting your enrollment deposit.

    2. Submit the Deferral Request Form: Tell us briefly about your plans for the year (work, service, travel, etc.).

    3. Stay Connected: We’ll keep you on our mailing list so you don't miss out on housing or registration deadlines for your new start term.

    4. Confirm Your Return: A few months before your new start date, you'll simply confirm you are still joining the herd!

Please note that deferral requests must be submitted by the July 1st deadline for Fall applicants. To learn more about how a gap year might affect your scholarships or financial aid, please visit our Gap Year & Deferral page.

  • At Affinity University, we define a First-Generation (First-Gen) student as any applicant whose parent(s) or guardian(s) have not completed a four-year bachelor’s degree in the United States.

There are no "extra" admission requirements (like higher test scores or additional classes) specifically for first-gen students. In fact, identifying as first-gen often provides you with additional opportunities and resources during the application process:

    • Self-Identification: You can easily "prove" your status simply by completing the parent education level section on your application (Common App or our Institutional App).

    • Holistic Review: Our admissions team recognizes the unique perseverance and "grit" required to navigate the college process independently. We consider this context when reviewing your personal essay and achievements.

    • Priority Support: First-gen applicants are often prioritized for specific bridge programs, which help students transition from high school to college life before the fall semester begins.

    • Exclusive Scholarships: Many of our need-based and merit-based grants are reserved specifically for students who are the first in their families to attend a university.

    • Application Fee Waivers: If you are a first-generation student and meet certain financial criteria, you may be eligible for an automatic waiver of your application fee.

Note: Even if your siblings or cousins have attended college, you are still considered "First-Gen" if your parents did not graduate with a four-year degree!

  • Understanding Your Early Application Options

If you're looking to get your decision early, Affinity University offers two distinct pathways. Here is how they break down:

    1. Early Decision (ED) — The "Binding" Choice

    • Commitment: Binding. If you are accepted, you are legally and ethically committed to attending Affinity University and must withdraw all other college applications.

    • Best For: Students who have done their research and know Affinity is their absolute #1 choice.

    • Application Deadline: November 1st.

    • Decision Notification: Mid-December.

    2. Early Action (EA) — The "Flexible" Choice

    • Commitment: Non-Binding. You get your decision early, but you have until May 1st to decide if you want to enroll. You can still apply to other schools and compare financial aid packages.

    • Best For: Students who want to finish their college applications early but want the freedom to compare offers.

    • Application Deadline: November 1st.

    • Decision Notification: Mid-January.

Key Comparison Points for Your Choice:

    • Financial Aid: Early Action is generally better if you need to compare financial aid offers from multiple schools. Early Decision applicants should use our Net Price Calculator before applying.

    • Demonstrated Interest: Applying Early Decision sends the strongest possible signal to our admissions committee that you are 100% committed to our community.

    • Deadlines: Both options share the same November 1st deadline, so make sure your transcripts and letters of recommendation are ready by then!

  • Applying for work-study is a two-part process: first, you must be awarded work-study as part of your financial aid package; second, you must apply for a specific job on campus.

    Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

    • Submit your FAFSA: You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year.

    • Indicate Interest: Ensure you checked "Yes" to the question asking if you are interested in Federal Work-Study.

    • Review Your Award Letter: Check your Affinity University Financial Aid Portal. If "Federal Work-Study" is listed as an award, you are cleared to look for a job!

Step 2: Find and Apply for a Job

    • Browse the Student Job Board: Log in to the Affinity Career Portal (found in your Student Dashboard) to see a list of open positions.

    • Filter for "Work-Study": Some jobs are open to all students, but "Work-Study Required" positions are reserved specifically for students with your award.

    • Prepare Your Resume: Even for on-campus roles like Library Assistant or Lab Aide, you’ll need a basic resume.

    Step 3: Interview and Hiring

    • The Interview: Once you apply, the department supervisor will contact you for a brief interview.

    • The Authorization Form: Once hired, your supervisor will help you complete a Work-Study Authorization Form. This tells the Financial Aid office exactly where you’ll be working.

    • Payroll Paperwork: You will need to visit the Human Resources office to complete your I-9 and W-4 forms so you can get paid!

    Important Things to Remember:

    • It’s a Paycheck, Not a Tuition Credit: Unlike a scholarship, work-study funds are paid directly to you via bi-weekly paycheck based on the hours you work. You can use this money for books, rent, or coffee!

    • Earnings Limit: Your award letter will show a "Maximum Earnable Amount" (e.g., $3,000). Once you hit that limit for the year, you usually have to stop working unless the department can move you to their private budget.

    • Academic First: Work-study supervisors are required to be flexible with your class schedule. You are a student first and an employee second.

  • At Affinity University, we value the diverse perspectives transfer students bring to our campus. We offer several scholarship tiers specifically designed for those transitioning from community colleges or other four-year institutions.

    1. Automatic Transfer Merit Scholarships

    • How it works: You are automatically considered for these when you apply—no extra application is needed!

    • Criteria: Based primarily on your cumulative GPA from all previous college-level coursework.

    • Award Range: Typically between $5,000 and $12,000 per year, renewable as long as you maintain a 3.0 GPA at Affinity.

    2. Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society Award

    • Eligibility: Available to students transferring from a community college who are active members of the PTK Honor Society.

    • The "Bonus": This is often stackable, meaning it can be added on top of your general Merit Scholarship.

    • Requirement: You’ll just need to provide proof of membership (like a certificate or a note on your transcript) during the admissions process.

    3. Associate Degree Completion Grant

    • Eligibility: Designed for students who have completed their Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) before transferring.

    • Goal: This grant is our way of rewarding you for finishing your foundational degree. It helps bridge the gap for your final two years of study.

    4. Departmental & Major-Specific Awards

    • Focus: Once you are admitted into a specific college (like the School of Engineering or School of Business), you may be eligible for niche scholarships reserved for juniors and seniors in that field.

    Pro-Tip for Transfer Applicants:

    • Deadline Matters: While we accept transfer applications on a rolling basis, the Priority Scholarship Deadline is March 1st for Fall entry and November 1st for Spring entry.

    • Filing the FAFSA: Don't forget to add Affinity University's school code to your FAFSA so we can calculate your state and federal grant eligibility alongside these scholarships!

  • The Scholarship Priority Deadline is the date by which your application must be submitted to receive maximum consideration for all available institutional scholarships.

Think of it as the "Front of the Line" for financial aid. After this date, scholarship funds are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until the budget is exhausted.

    Why Does It Matter?

    • First Access to Funds: Many of our most prestigious awards (like the Presidential Scholarship) are high-demand. We begin reviewing and awarding these as soon as the priority deadline passes.

    • Competitive Edge: By meeting this deadline, you signal to the admissions committee that you are highly organized and serious about attending Affinity University.

    • Budget Realities: Every university has a set "pot" of scholarship money. If you apply after the priority date, there may simply be less money left in the pot, even if your grades are perfect.

How Do I Meet the Deadline?

    • Complete Your File: "Applying" doesn't just mean hitting submit on the application form. To be considered "complete" by the deadline, we must also have received your transcripts, test scores (if applicable), and letters of recommendation.

    • Mark Your Calendar: At Affinity University, our Priority Scholarship Deadline is December 1st for Fall applicants.

    • No Extra Steps: For most of our merit-based awards, meeting this deadline is the only extra step you need to take—you are automatically considered once your file is in!

    The "Golden Rule" of Deadlines:

If you submit your application by the Priority Deadline (Dec 1st), you are guaranteed to be reviewed for every dollar you're eligible for. If you wait until the Regular Deadline (Jan 15th), you'll only be considered for whatever funds remain.

  • Affinity University actively supports students using employer-sponsored tuition assistance. We offer a Tuition Deferment Program specifically designed to align with most corporate reimbursement cycles.

How It Works: The 4-Step Process

    • Step 1: Verify Your Benefits — Check with your HR department to confirm your annual limit (e.g., the IRS tax-free limit of $5,250 or higher) and their grade requirements (usually a "C" or better).

    • Step 2: Submit the Deferment Form — Before the semester begins, submit our Employer Reimbursement Intent Form. This tells our Student Accounts office that your company will be paying after the term ends.

    • Step 3: Pay the "Gap" — You are responsible for paying any amount not covered by your employer (such as student fees or costs exceeding your annual cap) by the standard tuition deadline.

    • Step 4: Finalize & Reimburse — At the end of the semester, we provide you with an official grade report and itemized invoice. You submit these to your employer, they pay you, and you then settle your deferred balance with the university.

    Why Use Deferment?

    • Protect Your Cash Flow: You don’t have to pay the full tuition out-of-pocket upfront while waiting for your company to pay you back months later.

    • Extended Deadlines: For students with approved forms, the final payment deadline is typically extended to 30 days after the semester ends.

    Important Details to Note:

    • Direct Billing vs. Reimbursement: If your company uses a direct-pay system (like Guild Education or Bright Horizons), please contact the Bursar’s Office directly, as we may be able to bill them through a third-party portal.

    • Grade Requirements: Remember that your employer usually requires a specific grade to reimburse you. If you do not meet their requirements, you remain personally responsible for the full tuition balance at Affinity.

    • FAFSA & Reimbursement: You must still report employer assistance on your FAFSA, as it is considered a form of financial aid and may affect your eligibility for other grants.

  • We understand that a lot can change between the time you file your FAFSA and the first day of class. If your family experiences a significant financial shift, Affinity University has a formal process to re-evaluate your aid eligibility.

    Common "Change in Circumstance" Examples:

    • Loss of Income: Recent unemployment or a significant reduction in household wages.

    • Unreimbursed Medical Expenses: High out-of-pocket costs not covered by insurance.

    • Separation or Divorce: Changes in household status after the FAFSA was filed.

    • One-Time Income: A one-time inheritance or IRA withdrawal that artificially inflated your reported income.

How to Request a Review (The "Appeal" Process):

    1. Contact Financial Aid: Email the Affinity Financial Aid Office to request a "Special Circumstance" or "Professional Judgment" form.

    2. Submit Documentation: You will need to provide proof of the change, such as termination letters, final pay stubs, or recent tax returns.

    3. The Review: Our committee will manually adjust your FAFSA data to reflect your current financial reality rather than your past tax year.

    4. Updated Award: If the review results in a higher "Financial Need," we will issue a revised Financial Aid Award Letter.

Important Tips for a Success Appeal:

    • Don't Wait: The sooner you notify us, the better. Funds for certain grants are limited, so early appeals have a better chance of securing additional aid.

    • Be Specific: Provide a clear narrative. Instead of saying "We have less money," explain "My parent was laid off in January 2026, resulting in a 40% loss of household income."

    • Keep Paying: While your appeal is under review, you should still follow the current payment plan or deadlines to avoid late fees. Any new aid will be credited to your account retroactively.

A Note on "Merit" vs. "Need" Appeals:

Please note that a Financial Reconsideration is based on documented financial hardship. If you are looking for more money based on your academic achievements or a better offer from another school, that is considered a Merit Scholarship Appeal, which follows a different process.

  • At Affinity University, we believe your education should be as unique as your goals. You can absolutely double major or add multiple minors to your degree.

For visionaries who want to break traditional boundaries, we also offer a Customized Degree Path. Working closely with an academic advisor and a faculty mentor, you can blend disciplines—like combining Data Science with Philosophy or Architecture with Environmental Engineering—to create an interdisciplinary curriculum tailored specifically to your future career.

  • Yes! Unlike many universities, Affinity University allows freshmen to have vehicles on campus. > To keep our central campus pedestrian-friendly, first-year students are required to purchase a First-Year Parking Permit, which gives you access to our designated residential lots. If you’d rather leave the car at home, we also provide a 24/7 Campus Shuttle and a free bike-share program to help you navigate our campus and the surrounding city with ease.

  • Affinity University offers the best of both worlds with two distinct campus experiences.

Our main campus in Boulder, CO, is nestled at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. It’s a world-class hub for innovation, outdoor adventure, and a vibrant tech scene. Whether you’re brainstorming at a cafe on Pearl Street or hiking the Flatirons between classes, Boulder offers an unmatched quality of life.

Our Sacramento, CA campus puts you in the heart of California’s state capital. Known as the 'Farm-to-Fork' capital, Sacramento offers a rich urban culture with direct access to government, policy-making, and diverse professional industries. Plus, you’re just a short drive from both Lake Tahoe and the Bay Area!

  • For a university with campuses in the active hub of Boulder and the sun-drenched Sacramento valley, intramurals are a huge part of the "Affinity" experience. This is a great way to sell the social and wellness side of campus life.

Here is the bot response for Ollie and the entry for your master spreadsheet.

    The "Ollie" Bot Response (Public-Facing)

"Getting involved in intramurals is one of the fastest ways to build your community at Affinity! Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just looking for a fun way to stay active, we have a league for you.

    • How to Join: Log in to the Affinity Rec Portal (IMLeagues) using your student ID.

    • Team Options: You can register as a 'Free Agent' to be matched with a new group of friends, or you can grab your roommates and start your own team as a Captain.

    • The Lineup: We offer everything from traditional basketball and soccer to Boulder-specific favorites like 'Inner-Tube Water Polo' and Sacramento’s outdoor grass volleyball leagues.

No experience is required—just a pair of sneakers and a bit of competitive spirit!

  • We want to make an Affinity education as accessible as possible. Instead of paying your entire semester balance at once, you can enroll in the Affinity Monthly Payment Plan.

    • Interest-Free: Our plans are interest-free, allowing you to spread your tuition, fees, and housing costs over 4 or 5 manageable monthly installments.

    • Easy Enrollment: You can sign up directly through your Student Financial Portal before the start of each semester.

    • Small Setup Fee: There is a nominal, one-time enrollment fee per semester, but no credit check is required.

It’s a great way to budget for your education without the pressure of a single large payment!

  • For your Affinity University demo, this response needs to be direct and instructional, as students are usually looking for this information while they have the FAFSA website open in another tab.

Since your campuses are in Boulder, CO and Sacramento, CA, the bot should clarify if there is one central code or two separate ones (in most university systems, there is one main federal code).

    The "Ollie" Bot Response (Public-Facing)

"Adding us to your FAFSA is a quick process! Whether you’re applying to our Boulder or Sacramento campus, you can use our central Federal School Code: 001234.

    How to add us:

    1. Log in to your processed FAFSA at studentaid.gov.

    2. Navigate to the 'School Selection' section (or select 'Add or Remove Schools' under your 'My Activity' dashboard).

    3. Search for 'Affinity University' or enter our code: 001234.

    4. Once added, remember to sign and submit the correction so your information is sent to our Financial Aid Office.

Once we receive your data, we’ll start building your personalized aid package!

  • At Affinity University, your application for admission is your application for merit scholarships. There are no extra forms to fill out or separate essays to write.

    • Automatic Consideration: When our admissions team reviews your file for a decision, we automatically evaluate you for all institutional merit-based awards.

    • The 'Priority' Advantage: To ensure you are considered for the largest awards, simply submit your application by our Scholarship Priority Deadline (December 1st).

    • Notification: If you're awarded a merit scholarship, you'll see it listed right in your official Financial Aid Award Letter!

  • At Affinity University, we use Canvas as our primary Learning Management System (LMS).

We chose Canvas because it’s a modern, intuitive 'digital hub' that keeps your academic life organized. Whether you’re at our Boulder or Sacramento campus, you can use the Canvas Student App to:

  • We want you to feel confident and connected the moment you step onto campus. Affinity University offers several bridge programs at our Boulder and Sacramento campuses:
